Dawn of Hope
Coal Creek Canyon, Colorado
I set out in the pre-dawn darkness of an early October Colorado morning to try to capture a beautiful sunrise. I drove down the winding Coal Creek Canyon roadway to the entrance to the canyon, then a little more to Plainview Road, parked and--as best I could in the dim light--scout for a position to set up my camera. Near the creek bed, I spotted a cottonwood tree that had already shed most of its leaves. The stark branches and noble form made a perfect silhouette for the colorful sky already developing half an hour before dawn. With the light rapidly changing, and clouds advancing rapidly across the eastern sky, I waited, checked my light meter every minute or so, double-checked my aperture and shutter speed settings. Finally, the rising sun lit up the underside of the clouds, creating the glorious sunrise.
More often than not, Mother Nature is fickle. On this occasion, she delivered in grand fashion. Experiences like this make the hardships of chasing the beauty of nature worthwhile. Photo © copyright by Michael Lynn Roberts.
