Antelope Swirl

Antelope Canyon Navajo Nation Park, Dinetah

This is the first photograph I made on my first visit to Lower Antelope Canyon in 2006, and it remains one of my all-time favorites from all my many visits. The contrast of deep blue, reflecting the sky, and the reflected red, orange, and yellow light on the upper cayon walls, plus the shapes and contours from centuries of wind and flowing water, combine to create a 3-D, near-far effect and an intriguing abstract of shape and color. I made this picture by pointing the camera almost straight up. What cannot be seen is the slit of skylight around the corner and the ladder I used to climb down into the canyon from the surface slick rock above. I have had a ton of fun climbing through this canyon with my 8x10 and 4x5 wooden field cameras. Every turn, every angle, presents some new creative possibility. The colors and shapes are both wildly imaginative. Care must be taken to compose because blown highlights as well as detail-less black shadows are so easily overlooked. Exposures on 100 ISO film run from 30 seconds to four or more minutes. Each 8x10 exposure is an investment of $25, just for film and developing, so compositions must be highly selective; only a handful of film holders can be taken into the canyon on any one visit. The challenges of climbing down, around, and up plus the gyrations of moving the camera while composing, often with one's back and neck stretched to their limits and leg muscles straining to maintain balance, increase the demands of operating in tight spaces and low light conditions. I was fortunate in the early years to be able to photograph in Lower Antelope without the crowds of visitors that must be contended with today. I treasure the memories of those excursions, the excitement and fun of discoveries, and the gratifyingly beautiful results. Slot canyons are truly one of Nature's best ideas!
