Among the Indian Peaks
Indian Peaks Wilderness Area, Colorado
Enos Mills' plan for Rocky Mountain National Park called for 1,000 square miles to be included. Congress ultimately included 415 square miles in RMNP when the park was established in 1915. An additional 120 square miles contiguous to RMNP was designated the Indian Peaks Wilderness by President Jimmy Carter in 1978. The Indian Peaks is jointly adminstered by the National Forest Service and the National Park Service. The Indian Peaks Wilderness has numerous hiking trails, alpine lakes, and primitive/dispersed camping sites. This is one of the most visited wilderness areas in the country due to its close proximity to the Denver metro area. It takes me only about 40 minutes to reach the trailhead and another 45 minutes to hike the 2.2 miles to Lake Isabelle, one of the most beautiful and unknown (outside Denver/Boulder) alpine lakes in the Rockies. To make this photograph, I set up beside the lake outlet and used the foreground flowing water, rocks, and logs to create a 3D effect by emphasizing the distance across the lake to Navajo and Shoshoni Peaks. As is usual on summer days, the sky was empty of clouds until around 11AM, then clouds build very quickly, and you have to be ready. I liked the way sunlight spotlights Shoshoni Peak and the way the clouds fill up the sky, plus the little bit of reflection visible just beyond the waterfall. The dramatic lighting gives a real sense of what it feels like to be on the shore of Lake Isabelle during the summer months. The weather is very active and hikers have to stay alert to the possibility of sudden storms that bring lightening, cold, drenching rain, and hypothermia. I believe Lake Isabelle is every bit as spectacular a setting as the more famous Dream Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park.
