Antelope Heart

Antelope Canyon Navajo Nation Park, Dinetah

For eight years, at least once a year, I wandered through Lower Antelope Canyon, a Navajo Tribal Park, with my 4x5 and 8x10 cameras, looking for amazing compositions of color and swirling, flowing sandstone forms. Photographing in Lower Antelope Canyon with large format cameras and lenses and with color slide film is extremely challenging. First, the equipment is bulky and heavy and navigating the canyon requires climbing up and down ladders and shimmying through narrow walls and with limited space for foot placement. Second, the number of film holders one can carry through the canyon is limited. Third, isolating compositions is very challenging. The canyon floor is 120 feet below the surface stream bed, so light is very low. The goal is to find the most colorful places of reflected light, avoid including walls that are so dark they will not show up on film, and also avoid the bright highlights that will "blow out" the film. Large format lenses do not permit much light to shine through to see well enough to focus, so usually I am only able to find an edge of a wall or ceiling, use that edge to obtain a sharp focal point, then stop the lens aperture all the way down and hope everything else that is important to the image comes into focus. The light is so low that exposures are typically 30 seconds to four minutes long. All that said, however, the results can be electrifying and absolutely gratifying when everything comes together. In 2014, I ventured through Lower Antelope with my 1898 Rochester King 8x10 view camera. To reduce weight, simplify the process of composition and maximize my returns, I took only one lens into the canyon, and planned to shoot 5x8 inch compositions--two photographs on each single sheet of film. Somewhere in the heart of Antelope Canyon, I found this composition. When I saw the glowing, flowing bands of orange and yellow, I did not hesitate to use a full sheet of my precious film. The colors and flowing sandstone forms were exquisite. The combinations of blue, purple, orange, and yellow, S-curves and swirls, set off by the deep shadows in the upper left and lower right corners, was everything I hoped for.
