Archangel Falls
Archangel Falls, Zion National Park
As a nature photographer, I'm constantly reminded that when I embark on a photography expedition, I can only take what Mother Nature gives me and that I may not come away with what I had hoped to achieve during the weeks and months of planning and preparation. Such was the case on this occasion. I set out, in the dark, well before sunrise with the goal of photographing the location known as "The Subway," in Zion National Park. The National Park Service describes this hike as follows: "This is a very strenuous 9-mile round-trip hike through the Left Fork of North Creek that requires route finding, hiking in ankle to knee deep water, and scrambling over large boulders." The most strenuous part of the hike is the brutally steep 500' descent from the trailhead to the river. Two nights before the hike, I slept only four hours, and by the time I reached the river my quads were shredded, I felt exhausted, and I hadn't even covered one mile of the four and a half miles to my destination, much less the return. I seriously considered resting and then climbing back to the rim trailhead and driving the ten hours home. The old saying, "Discretion is the better part of valor," came to mind. Goals, however, don't just fall into your lap, you have to work for them. So I cinched up the straps on my camera pack, and turned up river. Archangel Falls is almost all the way to the Subway, around four miles into the hike. This was one of two other locations on the hike I planned to photograph, depending on conditions, so I took advantage of the opportunity to slip off my pack and scout around for a pleasing composition. This was fall, and the cottonwoods around the creek were showing fall color, so I searched for a composition that would include the falls, colorful trees, and the red canyon walls and worked to orchestrate these elements into a pleasing arrangement. The sky was partly cloudy and this worked to my advantage here. In general, and especially with film photography, it works better to photograph falls under slightly cloudy skies. The harsh reflections and bright contrast of direct sunlight are often too overwhelming for film. So the clouds made for great conditions for this picture. The light was bright enough to backlight the yellow cottonwood leaves and show off the red canyon walls and provided just the right highlights for the water streaming over the falls. A four second exposure gave just the right amount of blur to the water flowing over the falls. Though the cloudy conditions meant I could not achieve my goal of getting the reflected light I had hoped for at the Subway, it was perfect for Archangel Falls. So the photography gods smiled and Mother Nature, in her infinite wisdom, was beneficent. I could not be happier with this picture. Photo © copyright by Michael Lynn Roberts.
