I liked my first photograph of this scene, which I had made on 4x5 film, so much that I wanted to try to repeat that success with my 8x10 camera. This is a bigger challenge because of the more limited depth of field of longer focal length large format lenses. As it turns out, I had to wait several years for the conditions to be right--the blooming heracleum, the right light. This little aspen grove is on the property of one of my neighbors on the historic Wondervu Ranch in Colorado at an elevation of nearly 9,000'. Around the fourth of July each year, this little grove comes alive with blooming cow parsnip, heracleum maximum, with its large, delicate, lacy leaves. I'd been studying this grove for years, examining how the colors change, what time of day the light is best, how I might compose a photograph. One day, I suddenly noticed the bear claw scar, and the composition I had been seeking fell into place. For this photograph, I used selective focus, which I very rarely do, to bring the foreground tree into sharp focus while letting the background go soft. This emphasizes the three-dimensional, near-far, aspect of this intimate scene and softens the overall image consistent with the feeling of the setting as an intimate nature scene of calmness, stillness, and soft light and colors.
