Portland Japanese Garden, Oregon

Ahhhh...the Famous Portland Japanese Garden Maple Tree in all its fall color glory! The Pacific Northwest is an area I want to spend more time exploring. Due to Covid considerations, in the fall of 2020, my wife and I were unable to complete a planned visit to my 94 year old father in Georgia, so we were in the position of making a last minute change of travel plans. I had been wanting to make the trip to Portland for about six years and, since the timing was right and my beloved was up for it, off we went to Portland. I ponied up for an annual Garden membership to take advantage of the two-hour early admission each day. The first morning was a little disappointing because the fall colors were barely visible. The summer of 2020 was particularly bad for forest fires and one of the gardeners explained the trees were "confused" by all of the smoke. I used the time to figure out how in the world I was going to photograph the tree with my 7x11 field camera. Although photographs of the tree make it look huge, I had noticed on a prior visit in February 2015 that the tree is actually tiny--perhaps seven feet tall at most. To get underneath the canopy of leaves, I had to sit on the ground and duck my head while simultaneously craning my neck up. The challenge of maximizing the depth of field was really difficult. I had purchased a vintage, French Berthiot Perigraphe f14 120mm lens. This lens was first manufactured in 1899; it is an extreme wide angle lens that covers the 7"x11" format as well as 8x10. Since the lens is not mounted in a shutter, I also had to fabricate a front-mounted Packard shutter and be careful to use an oversized shutter and minimize the gap between the shutter blades and the lens to avoid vignetting the extremely wide field of view of the lens. This made the process of composing and focusing even more challenging. The Perigraphe lens has an external, rotating aperture wheel. To compose and focus, I had to remove the shutter, rotate the wheel to the f14 aperture, compose and focus, then remove the lens from the front of the camera, rotate the aperture wheel to f56, then replace the shutter and screw it down without being able to move to the front of the camera due to the low, overhanging limbs. Quite the acrobatics! Also the light was so low and the f14 apertue let in so little light, about all I could do to focus was to make sure the leaves on the far side of the tree were sharp against the sky. Despite all the physical challenges and contortions, I had a blast photographing this amazingly colorful and expressive Japanese Maple. We ended up extending our planned week-long stay to ten days to take advantage of the evolution of color. We filled in some of the time by exploring the northwest Oregon coast as well as the Columbia River Gorge, so all in all, it was a fantastic experience! I made this particular photograph early on a foggy morning. The fog is visible between the branches toward the upper right. One of the things that make this tree a special photographic subject--aside from the amazing fall colors and elaborately curved and twisted branches--is its location on a hillside overlooking a pond (visible in the lower right) and with much taller trees on the opposite hillside in the background. The background trees fill in a lot of the gaps that otherwise would be distractingly bright, keeping the viewer's focus on the colorful maple leaves. This is truly a unique tree and setting and highly deserving of all the attention it receives!
