Almost all of my Antelope Canyon photographs are one-offs. Because the reflected light deep inside the canyon changes from hour to hour, day to day, and season to season, it would be practically impossible to recreate any of these photographs. Moreover, the process I use to create these images involves wandering through the canyon very slowly and examining each place where the reflected light is creating a palette of colors, then deciding whether or not there is enough of a composition--as well as whether or not I have room to set up my camera without blocking access for others--and many times whether or not I have sufficient physical space to work behind or under the camera. I have literally bumped my head on low ceilings and walls I forgot were there, craned my neck and back, worked on my knees, and contorted myself into all kinds of strange positions to try to get a hoped-for composition arranged onto my camera's ground glass. Sometimes I have to give up and admit defeat--the picture I'm hoping to arrange just can't be achieved in the confined space of the twisting, turning contours of the canyon. Keep moving, keep looking, find the next one. The difficulty of working with large format film cameras in such a dark, tight space is challenging. I have to admit there are times I envy digital camera photographers with their extraordinarily high ISO sensors--how easy that must be! However, seeing the extraordinary images from Antelope Canyon on color slide film and the resulting prints, and knowing each image is unique, makes the work and effort so rewarding. This picture epitomizes the visual deliciousness of Lower Antelope Canyon for me. The rich colors and contours are beautiful, and it's amazing to know that this is solely (well, other than the composition) the work of Mother Nature. Sandstone, water, time. Stir well and serve in Lumachrome. Beauty in Stone.
