Antelope Canyon Navajo Tribal Park, Dinetah
I came to this amazing open chamber in Lower Antelope Canyon on one visit. I was nearing the end of my allotted time and was down to my last full sheet of 8x10 film. The light was very dim, but my spotmeter told me I could get the entire chamber in view, so I used the entire 8x10 sheet of film and opened my shutter for the four minute exposure. After about half a minute, a tour group came along and the guide was fascinated by my camera. I answered a couple of questions she had and then, without warning, she leaned around the front of the camera and looked directly into the lens. I scrambled to trip the cable release, closing the shutter. I fully believed my photographed was ruined, but crossed my fingers that the low light and my quick reaction might have prevented a catastrophe. After the group exited the far side of the chamber, I opened the shutter a second time for another three minutes. I was shaken, but there was nothing else to do but pack up and climb out of the canyon. If all else failed, I told myself, at least I knew about this location and could try again on my next visit. After developing all my film from this trip, I was surprised to find there was no double exposure discernable in the image. Relief! This chamber reminds me of the cathedral-like entrance chamber in Upper Antelope Canyon, with its repetition of layered walls resembling a series of curtains. Curtains in Stone.
