I visit my favorite grand scenic locations over and over to find the best light and climatic conditions to craft my photographs. This viewpoint of the gooseneck in the Colorado River and the canyonlands that stretch to the far horizon is one of my favorite locations. I love the grand scale of this vista. This is also a great location for early morning cross lighting during the morning golden hour, that time of day when the sun is low on the eastern horizon and its light passes through dense layers of Earth's atmosphere. I have two other favorite photographs of this view I've made over the years, but both of those were made in winter, with snow blanketing portions of the red rock. This is the only summer photograph I've made to date, with great Monsoon Season clouds filling the sky. Usually the clouds build during the afternoon heat; summer mornings tend to have empty, hazy skies. So this unusual, glorious sky, combined with the early morning golden hour cross lighting makes this photograph a treasured feature of my portfolio. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
