Delicate Arch Landscape
Delicate Arch, Arches National Park, Utah
Delicate Arch is a 60' tall, freestanding natural arch located in Arches National Park in Utah. This iconic symbol is one of the most recognized natural arches in the world. I have made the climb up to Delicate Arch and photographed it many times. My first visit was early on a summer morning. Discovering the entire arch was backlit by the rising sun, I determined to return near sunset to capture the golden hour lighting with the La Sal Mountains in the background. Hauling my 12lb wooden 1948 Kodak 2D View Camera and assorted gear, after many unsuccessful attempts, I eventually made a photograph I was proud to include in my Ultimate Quality portfolio. In this springtime picture, the arch glows softly orange in the light of the setting sun, the color of the arch contrasts with the blue sky, and I framed the tallest peak in the La Sals in the middle of Delicate Arch. The remains of a late winter snow can be seen in the shadows on the hillside beyond the arch. All of the distinct eroded texture of the Entrada sandstone can be seen in this large format print, revealing the hidden meaning of the "most delicately chiseled" arch in the entire area.
