Desert Oracle
Arches National Park, Utah
After years of photographing iconic subjects in Arches National Park--Delicate Arch, the Windows, the Courthouse area, the Balanced Rock panorama--I wanted to explore the park with new eyes and an attitude of discovery. I wanted to look for more abstract subjects like the incredible desert varnish and to find interesting subjects that are not highlighted in the park brochures. I chose a day when the weather forecast included some predicted cloud cover, and set off. This picture, titled Desert Oracle, was one of the products of that expedition. As I have mentioned elsewhere, our human minds are evolutionarily developed to pick out patterns of faces from random visual clutter. To my eye the rock formation on the right side of this composition bears a strong resemblance to the giant carved heads found on Easter Island. The striated clouds give a cartoon-like emphasis to unseen spoken words this stone oracle is proclaiming to modern civilization. Perhaps the oracle is advising us to slow down, take it easy, stop rushing to see what everyone else says we should see, tune out all the negativity being broadcast at us, and tune in to the beauty that is all around us.
