Floating Rock
Virgin Narrows, Zion National Park, Utah
The Virgin Narrows hike is a one-of-a-kind experience. It takes about two hours of hiking in knee-deep water, searching for solid footing on bowling ball sized river rocks to get to the narrow, steep canyon walls of the Wall Street section. For optimal conditions, it is best to be on the first shuttle bus up the canyon from the visitors' center. You really do not want to be in a hurry on this hike. Accidentally "going for a swim" while carrying expensive photography gear would be a real bummer. The heavy backpack and tripod also make it challenging to keep one's balance while navigating the rock-strewn river. Having conquered the challenges of the hike, however, the pay-off is immense in terms of beauty. The reflected light off the canyon walls, really a huge slot canyon with a river flowing through it, gives a warmth and glow to the the red and yellow sandstone, while the water and shadowed cliffs reflect the blue of the clear sky overhead.
