Loveland Pass Colorado
This is what Colorado ski country looks like in the month of May! The snow is too unstable for skiing, but the slopes of Arapahoe Basin ("A Basin), Keystone, and Breckenridge are clearly visible. The afternoon sun backlights the soft snow covered mountains, giving the scene a creamy iridescence. The hike up the Grizzly Peak trail gains one thousand feet of elevation in just one mile, a quad and lung busting challenge when loaded with fifty pounds of photography gear. The scenery, however, is even more breathtaking than the climb. Gale force winds make grand and large format photography a challenge here, as the winds try to turn the camera bellows into a sail. Subfreezing temperatures numb the fingers and face and force slow and deliberate concentration on the craft of operating the 19th century controls. But what a spectacular view of the Colorado Rockies and the aptly named Summit County!
