Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado
Longs Peak is THE iconic mountain in all of Rocky Mountain National Park. Visible all the way from Denver, Longs dominates the views of Colorado's Front Range mountains from Denver to the Wyoming border. Enos Mills, the Father of Rocky Mountain National Park, led tourists to the top of Longs Peak from 1885 to shortly before his death in 1922, climbing the mountain over 250 times. The colorful, rocky foreground is alpine tundra, consisting of hardy yet fragile alpine grasses, moss, and lichens. The steep dropoff into Forest Canyon ascends on the far side of the Big Thompson River to the majestic Longs Peak, fittingly, high in the clouds and still boasting snow on this midsummer's day.
