Mesa Arch Blue
Canyonlands National Park, Utah
Back in 2007, I photographed Mesa Arch in Canyonlands National Park at sunrise. That was a wonderful experience, and I've been at Mesa Arch at sunrise on many occasions since then. But what I wanted for this photograph was blue sky and a clear view of the La Sal Mountains through the arch. You see, the view through the arch is directly eastward. So at sunrise, you are looking either directly into the sun or else the sun is just barely to your left or right depending on the season. With such strong backlighting, the sky is completely white or full of haze. To make this photograph, I needed to wait until mid-morning when the sun would be in the southern or at least the southeastern part of the sky. I also wanted the La Sals ("The Salts" as the Franciscans called them, thinking the white stuff was salt) to be snow-capped, so that meant either fall, winter, or spring timing. Winter was out because the temperatures are so cold there is constant haze in the valleys and canyons of the Colorado River between the arch and the La Sals. Now you know why this is a springtime photograph. I arrived at the arch in time for sunrise but stood back away from the crowd of digital photographers jostling to make their sunrise photo. Within 15 minutes after sunrise, the crowd began packing up and heading back up the trail. After 30 minutes, there were no more than a dozen people remaining. After 45 minutes, I had the place to myself. I waited another hour and then set up my camera. As I was working, a few tourists came by, families with children, a foreign couple. We chatted, and I assured them they were not in my way as they stepped in front and around my tripod to make their pictures and take selfies. When I finally had my photograph composed, checked the corners for focus, stopped down the lens, set the aperture and exposure, inserted the film holder, rechecked the light, covered the camera with my dark cloth, and pulled the darkslide, I did a final look around to make sure no one was about to step into my composition, before I pressed the cable release. Weeks later, seeing the developed transparency film, I was elated all over again to see the final result. Goal realized! This is a different view of Mesa Arch than the iconic sunrise image, a different, but no less beautiful view of a spectacular scenic view of the American Southwest. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
