Summer Afternoon in Monument Valley
Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park, Utah
A perfect July afternoon in Monument Valley. The monsoon season cumulus clouds were floating lazily across the desert sky, the sun shone bright, and the valley monuments presided over the scenery with serene majesty and benign dignity. Having made one complete loop of the sandy, dusty, rutted, and rocky 17-mile valley road, I pulled into the parking area at my favorite viewpoint. It was mid-afternoon, not anywhere near the golden hour of sunset, but the scenery, the brilliant colors, and the composition of foreground, monuments, and sky compelled me to set up my camera and make a photograph. This is classic Monument Valley. Home for centuries to the nomadic Navajo sheepherders. Home of Hollywood Westerns and John Wayne. Land of extremes, harsh winter temperatures and wind, as well as blazingly hot, slow-moving summer days. Here are Sentinel Butte, the Big Indian, the King on His Throne, Wagon Train, and West Mitten in all the summer glory.
