Moran Dreams
Jackson Lake, Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming
Oxbow Bend in Grand Teton National Park is one of my favorite places to photograph, however I had never considered working from the location above the Jackson Lake Dam until 2014. That morning, I made a photograph at the Oxbow bend in the Snake River just before 9AM and was driving across the dam on my way to Jenny Lake. The clouds this crisp October morning were spectacular, the aspens around the Oxbow were golden, elk were bugling, and miraculously, the wind was relatively calm. On impulse, I parked the car and walked back across the dam to check out the view across the lake. Seeing the reflection in the lake, I raced back to my car for my camera gear, holding my breath that the winds would stay calm while I set up my tripod, put the camera on the tripod, opened it up, selected a lens and focal length, dialed in my composition, focused, and made all the necessary adjustments to the shutter, added a one stop neutral density filter to reduce the contrast between the sky and the reflection, inserted the film holder and pulled the darkslide. I made one--just one--exposure on 8x10 film with the lens nearly wide open to allow a fast shutter speed to maximize the reflection. The result of all this effort is very gratifying. I love how the clouds in this picture fill both the sky and the reflection. It has such a dream-like quality, I named it Moran's Dream after both the nearest mountain peak and the great 19th century explorer and artist, Thomas Moran.
