Morning Calm, Bear Lake Sunrise

Bear Lake, in Rocky Mountain National Park, is one of the most picturesque and accessible lakes in the park. With views of Hallett Peak and Longs Peak, and an easy, mostly level path all the way around, Bear Lake is one of the most visited and loved scenic locations. The trailhead at Bear Lake is also the starting point for many day hikes to other scenic locations such as Dream Lake and Emerald Lake. On this September morning, I arrived well before sunrise, hoping conditions would be good to make a photograph showing off the beautiful golden aspens that flow down the talus slope on the north side of the lake. I was astonished to find the wind was calm, a phenomenon I had never before seen at Bear Lake. Quickly, before the wind picked up, I hurried to the shoreline and composed a reflection of the opposite hillside, with Hallett Peak and a stand of brightly illuminated aspens at the peak of fall color. The lakeside was bathed in golden, early morning light, and the reflection in the lake's surface was perfect.
