Native Cathedral
Antelope Canyon Navajo Nation Park, Dinetah
When you first enter Upper Antelope Canyon, you are in a large open chamber. Looking around, the colors range from orange, red, and yellow to blue and purple, depending on how the light from the sky reflects off the walls deep underground in the slot canyon. It's a toss up whether your first impressions are of the vibrant colors or the unexpected forms and textures of the walls, which, for the most part are flowing sculptures shaped by water and wind, accented by the occasional broken edge caused by flash floods forcing tree branches through the slot. I have photographed this chamber many times; it is my favorite place to photograph in Upper Antelope Canyon both because of its beautiful colors and forms and also because it allows more room to work with my bulky, large format cameras. Often, it does not even matter if tour groups come through because I am composing photographs high up on the canyon walls where the best light and colors are located. On this particular visit, however, I stayed in the front chamber for an hour and a half and during several intervals, I had the place completely to myself. I used this opportunity to compose a floor to ceiling, wide angle view of the rear of the chamber, which reminds me of visits to some of the world's great cathedrals--Notre Dame in Paris, and St. Paul's in NYC, for example, when, standing alone at the front of the cathedrals with their soaring ceilings and elaborate decorations (stained glass, organ pipes, etc.) I am overwhelmed by the imagination, creativity, and sheer effort and investment of time it took to create such a large space to inspire awe and wonder. I felt the same awe and wonder in the presence of Mother Nature's creation of this large, imaginatively shaped, and stunningly colorful natural cathedral. Photo © copyright by Michael Lynn Roberts.
