Navajo Peak, Summer in the Rockies
Indian Peaks Wilderness Area, Colorado
Majestic Navajo Peak rises high above the Green Lakes and Navajo Glacier in the Indian Peak Wilderness just south of Rocky Mountain National Park, along the Continental Divide. I had tried for several years to hike high enough on the Arapahoe Glacier Trail to make this photograph, but high winds forced me to turn back time after time. Finally, I was lucky enough to attempt the hike on a relatively calm day and make this photograph. The bellows on large format cameras turn into sails in windy conditions making photography impossible. Stopping down large format lenses to achieve maximum focus depth of field only adds to the challenge. I love all of the details of glacier-carved rocks, scree, lichen, and snow in this picture. The lakes and the contrast of the green vegetation with the blue Colorado sky and wispy clouds make this a perfect summer scene in the Rockies.
