North Window Sunrise
Arches National Park, Utah
This is a photograph of Turret Arch, as seen through the east side of North Window Arch in the Windows section of Arches National Park in Moab, Utah. To get this composition, I hiked up and through the North Window, then climbed down and back up to a small, level rock ledge. There was not much room for my tripod and 8x10 King View Camera, so moving from back to the front of the camera to focus, stop down, and manually set the exposure was precarious. I was fortunate on this morning to have some clouds in the southwest sky over Canyonlands National Park. After arriving before sunrise, I waited about half an hour for the shadow on Turret Arch to recede. Still within the Golden Hour, the golden sunrise light on this scene warms the Entrada sandstone and the long shadows contrast with the brightly lit areas. The blue sky also contrasts well with the warm tones of the sandstone. The details of the eroded face of North Window and the small juniper in the bottom right of the picture are faithful to the Hudson River School tradition. This scene combines elements of an intimate landscape and those of grand scenic landscapes: North Window dominates the foreground and frames the view of Turret Arch in the mid-ground; the background petrified sand dunes and low clouds tell of a far distant landscape waiting to be explored.
