Antelope Canyon Navajo Tribal Park, Dinetah
One of the beautiful things about abstract art is how it can stimulate the imagination. When I am working in slot canyons, I am concentrating very hard on, first, finding interesting compositions, and then--very quickly--absorbed in the mundane, but crucial technical requirements of making the photograph--composing and focusing on the ground glass in very dim light, taking light readings at multiple points with my 1 degree spot meter and doing the mental math to calculate the optimal exposure, reminding myself to close the shutter and set the aperture and the correct timed exposure, inserting and seating the filmholder and withdrawing the dark slide without inadvertently moving the camera off of the composed frame, making sure no tour group participants are about to step in front of my open lens, pressing the cable release without jerking it, etc. Time is of the essence, especially in Antelope Canyon, because you are "on the clock." Time in the canyon is limited to 60 or 90 minutes and even if time was unlimited, the amount of time when the sun is high enough in the sky to create the needed reflected light down the canyon walls is limited each day. Much later, when the film is developed, there is time to discover anew the wonder of the colors and flowing forms I recognized and arranged but did not have time to linger over. This, and with prints of the image, is the time for enjoyment, wonder, and letting the imagination run wild. Most of my slot canyon photographs have very sharp, clear colors. In contrast, the colors in this image are very soft, very pastel. I enjoy this effect. It is very soothing while still suggesting intrigue and stirring the imagination.
