The Pedernal, Final Resting Place of Georgia O'Keeffe
Ghost Ranch, New Mexico
Georigia O'Keeffe is one of the artists whose work influences my own. I have an ongoing series of macro photographs of flowers, created with large format camera equipment, that can be printed very large, similar in size to O'Keeffe's paintings and a couple of cow skulls I continue to experiment with. I have visited and photographed Plaza Blanca, the location O'Keeffe called The White Place, and her home in Abiquiu as well as Ghost Ranch in New Mexico. And, of course, the O'Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe. I love the New Mexico landscape and can understand why O'Keeffe made the area home for at least part of the year from her first visit in 1929 to her death at age 98 in 1986. O'Keeffe's home at Ghost Ranch has a marvelous view of the Pedernal, a 9,866', flat-topped mesa to the south. She was fascinated by this mountain, and created a total of 28 paintings. She said,"God told me if I painted it enough, he would give it to me." When O'Keeffe died and her body was cremated, her ashes were carried to the top of the Pedernal by her loved ones and scattered according to her wishes. As my wife and I were leaving Ghost Ranch on one visit in July 2017, I was struck by the monsoon season clouds building up and rolling in from the southwest. I pulled over, scrambled with my 810 view camera up the high bank at the entrance and made this photograph. I like the mood of this picture. It is a bit unusual for my work, but I feel the mood conveys the reverence I have for this place and for the artist who inspired it. Photo © copyright by Michael Lynn Roberts.
