Serenity
Lake MacDonald, Glacier National Park, Montana
There are a few Western National Parks that are still on my radar, places I would love to visit and make photographs but are a little distant from my home base in Wondervu, Colorado for me to get there often. Glacier National Park, on the Montana-Canadian border, is one of these. So it was that in July 2016, my wife and I embarked on an epic road trip with our good friend and fellow photographer, Michael Kadillak. We journeyed north through Cheyenne and stopped overnight alongside the Wind River, near where Albert Bierstadt composed two of his famous paintings, Wind River Country (Denver Art Museum, https://www.denverartmuseum.or...) and Wind River, Wyoming (Denver, American Museum of Western Art/The Anschutz Collection). Continuing on north through Cody, we crossed the Bighorn Mountains to Cooke, Montana, through Paradise Valley, and eventually northwest to Flathead Lake and, after four or five days on the road, exploring and photographing as we went, the town of Whitefish, Montana, our basecamp for exploring both the west and east sides of Glacier. Arriving mid-afternoon, we checked into our hotel and hustled over to Glacier to get our first look at the park and to see if the late afternoon light would yield some good options. We entered the park at the Apgar entrance and immediately drove the short distance to Lake MacDonald. Views from the shore were amazingly beautiful. The pristine, glacier-fed blue water, surrounded by mountains, revealed brightly colored river rocks just under the surface on the southern shore. A scattering of puffy clouds hung in the sky. The cross-lighting was perfect for my color positive film, so I set up my 1898 Rochester King 8x10 and composed a photograph, using front tilt to keep the foreground in focus while allowing a fast enough shutter speed to retain details of the reflection of the clouds and movement in the water's surface. I made five exposures, with and without a polarizing filter, working my way down the shoreline. After days of travel, cooped up in a car crammed with gear, it was exciting to finally reach our destination and to have such a glorious scene awaiting us. The real gems of Glacier National Park, in my view, are the alpine lakes--MacDonald, St. Mary's, and Many Glacier. Having finally seen this park with my own eyes, I can firmly state Glacier National Park is a national treasure. Photo © copyright by Michael Lynn Roberts.
