Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah
Bryce Canyon is one of the most amazing places in the American Southwest. The hoodoos are fantastical shapes, and under the right lighting conditions--when the sun is low in the sky and produces golden and/or reddish light that bathe the already yellow/red hoodoos--the whole scene glows with a magical light. I made this photograph at Sunrise Point on a freezing morning in late March 2008 with the remnant of a recent snow at the 9,000' elevation. This photograph perfectly captures my feelings of awe at the spectacle of Bryce Ampitheater--the early morning light creates long shadows that increase the contrast and drama of the scene. The recent snow adds another layer to the scene as well as darkening the sandstone and saturating the colorful sandstone. The cirrus clouds pick up the early morning light and add yet more texture and patterns sculpted by the wind. Strangely beautiful.
