The beauty of the colors in this photograph compelled me to include it in my portfolio. I had arranged the composition because of the fascinating cracked mud and the colorful eroded badland foothills along the east side of Death Valley. As the sun began to set, I asked a companion--another 8x10 film photographer--if he was bothered by the front-lighting on the scene. I usually avoid front-lighting because it obscures the hyper-realistic details I love to capture with my large format film camera. But in this case, the red light filtered through the atmosphere from the setting sun bathed the entire scene in such a warm, colorful glow, that I felt myself pulled toward this unusually colorful landscape.
