Mother and Child, Yei bi Chei, and Totem Pole
Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park, Utah
These three monuments can be found on the far side of Monument Valley. Mother and Child is the most recognizable as a remnant of an ancient mesa, eroded to a fin, and further eroded to a standing sculpture atop a crumbling pedestal. Yei bi Chei and Totem Pole, by contrast, stand atop a dune field, far removed from the nearest mesa. The Yei symbolize Navajo gods. Yei bi Chei can be translated as "maternal grandfather of the yei." Yei bi Chei is another name for Talking God who speaks on behalf of the other Holy People. Talking God was one of the first four Holy People encountered by the Navajo. Talking God is called forth along with eight other male yei in the "Nightway," a ceremony in which masked dancers personify the gods. The legends, stories, mythology, and religion of the Navajo, passed down for centuries in oral tradition, explain why these monuments remain sacred to the Navajo people.
