I love slot canyons in the American Southwest. The wild colors, ranging from deep purple to flaming orange and sunburst yellow, as well as the flowing shapes, makes a wonderful tapestry of form and color to compose original, creative works of natural art. Slot canyons with rivers flowing through them present special conditions for large format photography. The heavy cameras, backpacks and tripods have to be carefully balanced to protect against stumbles over unseen river rocks and accidental swimming incidents. The flowing water, often reflecting blue sky above, and the smooth, colorful river rocks also provide additional compositional elements, adding an additional layer of form, color, and detail that is not present in dry, sandy canyons. Such is the case in this photograph from the Wall Street area of the Narrows section of the Virgin River in Zion National Park. The line of river rocks leads the viewer's line of sight into the picture toward the bright, colorful canyon walls. This is at once an intimate landscape and, because of its 60% aspect ratio, a horizontally expansive landscape with great details and realism. The colorful walls and shapes also give the picture a quality of imagination and surrealism. All the elements I love about slot canyons and their colorful, creative forms.
