Wave Abstract
Coyote Buttes North, Arizona
This a tight, abstract composition of the fantastical Wave Navajo sandstone with its dramatic swirls and curls. On the last Friday in February, 2013, my wife and I were lucky enough to win the walk-in lottery held by the Bureau of Land Management in Kabab, Utah for a hiking permit to The Wave in Coyote Buttes North of the Paria Canyon-Vermillion Wilderness. Hiking directions were a bit obscure, mostly going from landmark to landmark on the on-again, off-again trail through arroyos, across slickrock, and across open desert. The total distance, one-way was nearly three miles. After some trial and error, we finally found our way to The Wave. It is just as crazy in person as it is in photographs. It does resemble frozen waves except in crazy striped reddish-orange instead of sea green. In this close-up abstract, I use the lines on the nearest wall on the right to lead into the picture, and the alternating patterns on the second wall and the back wall to lead the viewer's eye deeper into and around the picture. All total, we spent about eight hours hiking into and out of the permit area and making photographs and I used every sheet of 8x10 film I carried with me. Absolutely amazing geological beauty!
